Description

COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) —A Colquitt County man who was once homeless is now working to help others experiencing homelessness in Moultrie while bringing awareness to the issue.

From homelessness to outreach

Chris Gore was homeless in Thomasville four years ago. While there, he met two people who introduced him to a different way of living.

“That night, I broke down crying and I raised my hand and said, ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus Christ.’ I accepted Jesus, and then, through help from the Thomasville Street Feed, I was able to get a job, get into housing, get a vehicle,” Gore said.

After getting back on his feet, Gore felt led to visit Moultrie, where he began helping and serving the unhoused population through his non-profit Hope Ministry of South Georgia.

Housing issues in Moultrie

“Here in Moultrie, Georgia, we have a significant amount of individuals who are experiencing homelessness,” Gore said. “Pretty much under every bridge, every abandoned building in town, and in the woods everywhere, are my friends sleeping and struggling having a hard time.”

Gore said there is currently no homeless shelter in the area. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, he showed WALB several parts of Moultrie where unhoused people set up camp and sleep every night.

Data from Data USA shows 14.2% of the population in Colquitt County was living with severe housing problems in 2025.

Weekly outreach events

Gore decided to step in and help.

“This is just something that is much needed in Moultrie,” Gore said. “I’m fairly certain right now everybody is very aware that there is a homeless problem here in town. Now, it’s time to stop talking about it and it’s time to start doing something.”

Every Tuesday at Moultrie Inn, Hope Ministry gives away items such as donuts, pecans and hygiene products to people in need in Moultrie and Colquitt County.

“If the community comes together and we show love, there would be no homeless people in town. It would be a thing of the past,” Gore said.

In addition to the Tuesday outreach event, Gore hosts street feeds every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Piggly Wiggly in Moultrie.
