ARKANSAS (KTUL) — A suspect arrested in a double homicide at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas was a former teacher for Broken Arrow Public Schools.
Officials with the school district say the man who was arrested, 28-year-old James Andrew McGann, was a teacher during the 2023-2024 school year. He taught 5th grade at Spring Creek Elementary and left of his own accord to work out of state, officials said.
"As with all employees hired by the district, he was subjected to and passed the legally required background checks prior to being hired," said Chief Communications Officer with Broken Arrow Public Schools, Tara Thompson. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family affected by this unimaginable act of violence."
The double homicide took place on Saturday, July 26. McGann was taken into custody at 4:57 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, in Springdale.
Officials report that a couple was brutally attacked and killed in front of their daughters, ages 7 and 9, at Devil's Den State Park. The children were not injured and are with family members.
The victims were identified as 43-year-old Clinton David Brink and 41-year-old Cristen Amanda Brink.
McGann's motive is still unclear, but officials believe he acted alone. He faces two counts of capital murder.
