CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) - The Grady County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a former detention officer following a months-long investigation into corruption and contraband trafficking inside the county jail.

Zachary Paul Wisham, who previously worked at the Grady County Detention Center, is charged with:

• Violation of Oath of Office
• Bribery

The investigation began in August 2025 after authorities received information that contraband was being brought into the facility and that staff members were allegedly receiving payments in exchange for prohibited items and favors. Investigators reviewed inmate phone calls, financial records, surveillance footage, audits, and witness statements over several months.

Officials say the evidence showed Wisham accepted money from inmates and outside associates in exchange for contraband, unauthorized assistance, and confidential information, actions that compromised the safety and security of the facility.

After the investigation concluded in February 2026, warrants were obtained and Wisham was taken into custody.

Sheriff’s officials say the case underscores their commitment to integrity and accountability within the agency.

The investigation remains under judicial review, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.
