Description

WASHINGTON (7News) — The family of Macari Jackson, who passed away last year, still hasn't received their son's ashes from Dunn and Son's Funeral Home in Washington, D.C.

"What's the number one question you have now?" asked 7News I-Team Investigator Scott Taylor.

"Where are my son's ashes? And whose ashes do I have?" said Brittani Davis, the mother of Marcari.

7News cameras were there when Asanti Williams, Dunn and Son's designated funeral director, walked out the front doors of D.C.'s Office of Administrative Hearings after attending a hearing in connection with a complaint filed by the Davis family to D.C.'s Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection.

Until recently, Williams was also the Vice Chair of D.C.'s Board of Funeral Directors, but resigned after our original story aired in January.

Williams was just fined $2,000, and the district has reprimanded her funeral director's license in connection with the missing ashes.

DLCP issued this statement to 7 News:

A reprimand is a formal disciplinary action that the D.C. Board of Funeral Directors is authorized to issue under D.C. Code 47–2853.17(c)(4). Ms. Williams agreed to settle a disciplinary action initiated by the Board, which included a formal reprimand and a $2,000 fine, for violations that occurred under her supervision as the designated funeral director at Dunn & Sons Funeral Service. Separately, Dunn & Sons Funeral Service also accepted a settlement that included $7,500 in fines and required remedial courses for staff, as authorized by the same statute.

Dunn and Son's Funeral Home has been fined $7,500.

Investigators said Brianna Dunn, the funeral home's director, admitted to giving Macari's mother the wrong ashes.

Dunn has to complete three hours of Cremation Best Practices and three hours of Ethical Business Practices.

"Nobody is being held accountable. You can give money here, or you could just do these 3 hours. That's not enough," said Davis.

Davis said the funeral home told her last year it gave her the ashes of a baby girl named Makari, first name spelled with a K, and not her son's ashes, as his first name is spelled with a C.

So far, Davis said she has seen no proof of the other baby's family.

Dunn and Son's sent 7News a statement in March after we sent their lawyer 13 questions:

"The Dunns have repeatedly expressed an interest in returning the cremains to the family. The incident is a mix-up void of any fraud, malice or intent. Both babies had the same name. Mrs. Dunn wasn’t informed of the date written by the crematorium. The cremation occurred on August 15th. Nothing further will be stated."

The funeral home did offer to return the cost of the cremation and apologized to the Davis family.

"Still going through pain. His first birthday was just the other day, on the 14th. We don't have his ashes... still," said Davis.

Asanti Williams and the funeral home are not commenting on the settlement with the district.
