ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A student was injured Wednesday in a shooting on the campus of Warner Robins High School that stemmed from a fight in the school bathroom, and a suspect is in custody, according to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.

A spokesperson for the Houston County School System said one student was shot. Initially, officials said there were two victims.

The student was taken to a hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office said there was a group of students in the bathroom involved in a verbal altercation. The altercation then turned physical and one student shot another.

The student that fired the gun ran away from the school, and was later arrested, officials said.

Both of the students involved are freshmen. The suspected shooter is 14 years old.

Law enforcement responded and all other students were safe in their classrooms, the district spokesperson said soon after the shooting.

Authorities have not released the identities of anyone involved in the shooting.

In a statement, Gov. Brian Kemp said he is grateful for the first responders and law enforcement that immediately responded to the school.

“Their action quickly brought the situation under control and kept students, faculty, and staff safe. As we wait for more details to emerge, we’re thankful for all those who keep our classrooms safe,” Kemp said.

Sen. Raphael Warnock said his prayers are with those affected and the entire Warner Robins community.

The campus will be closed for students Thursday and Friday, and there will be no virtual classes during that time, Principal Brett Wallace said in a letter to parents and staff.

“We want our students to have the opportunity to be at home, surrounded by family, and to take the time they need to process, heal, and care for one another,” Wallace wrote.

Students will return to campus Monday. Teachers return Friday.

There will be additional counselors at the school Friday and Monday to support students and staff members, Wallace said in the letter.

“We are grateful that the student who was injured is receiving care, and we are incredibly thankful for the quick response of law enforcement and first responders,” Wallace wrote.
