TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - A Valdosta woman has died and a man is critically injured after a crash Tuesday afternoon in Columbia County, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The wreck unfolded at about 1 p.m. along Northwest Lake Jeffery Road, a two-lane paved road in a rural area northwest of Lake City, per FHP. Authorities say a silver Hyundai Elantra was traveling west on the road when it collided with two Valdosta bicyclists traveling in the same direction.

One of the cyclists, a 51-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, per FHP. The other, a 72-year-old man, is being treated at UF Health Shands Hospital for “critical” injuries, as of Tuesday evening. Both were wearing helmets at the time of the wreck, a press release from FHP said.

The 73-year-old woman driving the Elantra was not injured in the wreck.

It is unclear what events led up to the collision or if the driver will face any charges. FHP was not immediately available for questions when contacted by phone and email from WCTV.
