COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The “Big Beautiful Bill” is now taking effect, reducing SNAP and Medicaid benefits nationwide. In response, Feeding the Valley is launching the Community Hunger Relief Fund to help meet the growing demand for food assistance across its 18-county service area.
Frank Sheppard, president and CEO of Feeding the Valley, says food insecurity is already high in the region, and these federal cuts will only make things worse.
“With the increase in food insecurity and the food shortages we’ve already been experiencing, we’re struggling to keep up with the current need,” Sheppard said.
The nonprofit hopes to raise $500,000 through the new fund to expand its operations and meet urgent needs. That includes boosting inventory levels, launching its new “Neighbor Market,” and increasing meal delivery services for children and seniors.
According to Feeding the Valley, the demand for food assistance remains 35% higher than it was before 2020. Meanwhile, fewer food trucks are arriving at their warehouses due to rising grocery prices, supply chain issues, and less federal support.
“One dollar donated provides six meals in our children feeding programs,” Sheppard added. “So $50 helps provide 300 meals to people in need.”
The organization says donations to the Community Hunger Relief Fund will directly help local families impacted by the cuts.
