DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) - Each year, more than 240,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

That’s why this October, the city of Douglas is turning pink to unite the community to honor survivors and raise awareness through the Passionately Pink campaign.

This year’s theme, “Pink Around Town,” was inspired after multiple members of the organization were personally impacted by breast cancer.

“One of our members was diagnosed with breast cancer — actually, two within the same week,” said President Lou Hennesy. “When you see one in eight, and we have about 34 women in our organization, that’s actually a percentage that’s true.”

According to the Society of Breast Imaging, women are encouraged to begin annual breast cancer screenings at age 40. But for one Douglas survivor, getting checked earlier made all the difference.

At just 31 years old, Dana Moyle discovered a lump in her breast — something doctors initially believed was too young to cause concern. After she pushed for further testing and shared her family history, she was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma.

“I was diagnosed at the age of 31,” Moyle said. “It was a form of breast cancer that was in the milk duct, and it was a grade 2–3, which means it was growing.”

Following her diagnosis, Moyle underwent a double mastectomy after tumors were found in both breasts. She later received reconstructive surgery and additional biopsies — all of which came back negative. Now three years cancer-free, she continues to share her journey, acknowledging that survivorship brings its own set of challenges.

“You still have survivor’s guilt and worries of, ‘Is it going to come back?’ Every time you feel a pain or have scans coming up — you worry,” Moyle shared. “But knowing you’re fighting for something that’s so important to you makes it worth it.”

Throughout Douglas, businesses, boutiques, and residents are decorating in pink — standing in solidarity with survivors like Moyle. The Passionately Pink campaign hopes to remind everyone that early detection saves lives — and that no one fights alone.

“Douglas is pink around town — not just for one community, but for every community touched by breast cancer,” Hennesy said. “We’re standing strong for survivors, fighters, and families — because together, we fight.”
