TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The Department of Justice asked the Supreme Court on Monday to reject an appeal to overturn Ghislaine Maxwell’s 2022 conviction.
The former associate of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was sentenced to 20 years in prison for helping Epstein sexually abuse underage girls.
Maxwell is currently serving out her sentence at the Tallahassee Federal Correctional Institution, according to the Bureau of Prisons.
The DOJ encouraged the Supreme Court to reject Maxwell’s appeal, arguing that a 2007 nonprosecution agreement made with Epstein in Florida does not extend to her or restrict prosecutors in New York.
WCTV legal analyst Joe Bodiford said now the ball is in the Supreme Court.
“Eventually, maybe they’ll tell us that they need an oral argument on it, set it on the docket, and want to hear from everybody and render an opinion, or they will just tell Ms. Maxwell to go kick rocks and that’ll be the end of it.”
Maxwell’s attorney, David Oscar Markus, emailed the following statement to WCTV regarding the DOJ’s request to SCOTUS.
“I’d be surprised if President Trump knew his lawyers were asking the Supreme Court to let the government break a deal. He’s the ultimate dealmaker—and I’m sure he’d agree that when the United States gives its word, it should keep it. With all the talk about who’s being prosecuted and who isn’t, it’s especially unfair that Ghislaine Maxwell remains in prison based on a promise the government made and broke," he wrote.
