JONES COUNTY, Ga (WGXA) — The plans to rezone over 600 acres of land for a potential data center in Jones County have been canceled after the developers withdrew their application on Monday, less than 24 hours before the scheduled zoning hearing.

In an email to the Jones County Planning and Zoning Director Tim Pitrowski, representatives from Thomas & Hutton Engineering and Eagle Rock Partners officially withdrew their application to rezone land for the Crooked Creek Technology Park, a 1.8 million square foot data center at the intersection of Highway 18 and Bethlehem Church Road.

The planning and zoning board members planned to hear from the public and vote on the commercial rezoning at their meeting on Monday at 6:00 p.m.

"Yes, they did withdraw their application and the matter will not be heard this evening," Pitrowski told WGXA. "They sent an email to my office earlier today. If they choose to reapply, we will provide the same public notice."

Since it was announced, Jones County locals, activists and advocacy groups have come together to push back against the plans for the data center. Highlighting their concerns about the potential environmental impact and the disturbance to the community.

This comes as similar proposals for the technology centers have popped up across Middle Georgia, including the approved rezoning for Rumble Road Technology Campus and the denied plans for the Boilingbroke data center in Monroe County, and the potential data center in Lamar County.

Plans for the Crooked Creek facility were submitted on Sept. 25, and EagleRock Partners is the same company behind a data center in Twiggs County.

Residents filed a lawsuit claiming Twiggs leaders skipped a mandatory Development of Regional Impact (DRI) review, which is meant to assess how major projects affect the region, before approving the rezoning of 251.5 acres of agricultural land on Adams Park Road.

While the plans for the Jones County data center are on hold, Pitrowski says if the developers decide to move forward by this Thursday, Oct. 23, the application would be heard at the next zoning meeting on November 17.

WGXA reached out to Thomas & Hutton Engineering and Eagle Rock Partners to learn why they decided to pull their application, along with their plans for the future, and is awaiting a response.
