DOOLY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — Crisp Regional Hospital said 26 people connected to a mass shooting in Vienna Sunday morning (Oct. 4) were treated at the hospital. Three of the 26 remain hospitalized and are in stable condition.
Hospital leaders said their emergency and trauma teams immediately went into action. Only five nurses and one doctor were working Sunday morning when the initial call came in.
Victims rushed from block party
Victims who attended a block party on Pine Street, which stretched across four blocks, were rushed to Crisp Regional Hospital, a Level III trauma center. Hospital staff brought in additional personnel and worked quickly to treat and stabilize patients.
“People came in here to help that weren’t on call, had no idea that this was going to happen, went to bed at night thinking it was just going to be another night, get up tomorrow morning at church, and they got a call at 2 o’clock in the morning and showed up. And if they hadn’t have it... it would have been a whole different story,” said Vincent Culpepper, MD, FACS (Fellow of the American College of Surgeons).
“How often do you guys even see gunshot wound patients come in?” WALB’s Zoe Wells asked.
“Probably two or three a month,” Dr. Culpepper replied.
“And you guys had several?”
“Eighteen, at least,” he said.
“In just a couple hours?”
“Yeah, probably in an hour’s time,” Dr. Culpepper said.
“That’s amazing.”
Four victims transferred to Level I trauma center
Four of the 26 victims were transported to a Level I trauma center outside the area.
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said he believes there were more than 1,000 people at the block party.
