Description
COOK COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – The Cook County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) issued more than 100 citations during a two-day traffic operation aimed at increasing compliance with Georgia’s Move Over Law and improving roadside safety.
The operation took place February 25 and 26 in memory of Caleb Abney and Tim Bruner.
According to Sheriff Doug Hanks, the operation focused on reducing speed-related crashes involving stationary emergency and service vehicles while educating drivers about the importance of the law.
During the two-day period, deputies issued 128 citations. Of those, 67 were for speeding and 14 were specifically for violations of Georgia’s Move Over Law.
Under Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-16), drivers traveling in the lane next to the shoulder must move over one lane when approaching stopped emergency, utility, sanitation, or service vehicles displaying flashing lights. If drivers cannot safely change lanes, they are required to slow below the posted speed limit and be prepared to stop. The law applies to law enforcement, fire and EMS units, utility and DOT vehicles, HERO units, and wreckers assisting at crash scenes.
Abney was struck by a speeding driver while seated in his patrol car with emergency lights activated during a traffic stop on February 19. Bruner was struck and dragged by a motorist while outside his patrol vehicle during a traffic stop on November 29, 2022.
The Sheriff’s Office says it will continue proactive enforcement and public education efforts to reduce preventable roadside crashes and protect first responders and motorists alike.
