CAMILLA, Ga. (WALB) - 18-year-old Jeremiah Florence has announced his intent to run for one of the Camilla City Council District 2 seats.

Florence became eligible to hold office after his birthday on July 20, beginning his dream career of public service starting in his hometown.

Florence said, “As this is the community that has poured into me, taught me different things. I think it’s no better way to start off than to show my commitment and appreciation by serving this very community.”

Florence is a 2025 graduate of Mitchell County High School and is a rising sophomore at Albany State University in the fall.

He holds several leadership positions including: Youth Council President of NAACP Mitchell County 5797 B; Civic & Government Affairs Liaison for the Mitchell County Schools Superintendent’s Roundtable; 2025 Youth of the Year, Boys & Girls Club of Mitchell County; 2024 Mitchell County Youth Citizen of the Year.

“My characteristics and everything I have done leading up to this point I believe have prepared me for this pivotal moment right here so it is definitely making sure I stay committed, focused, and doing everything I can to excel personally and make sure that I can benefit the citizens of Camilla,” he said.

On July 17, Governor Brian Kemp issued an executive order suspending Kelvin Owens, mayor of Camilla, of his office effective immediately.

This comes after Owens was indicted on May 28, 2025, for charges of election interference and conspiracy to commit election fraud. The governor’s office was made aware of the indictment and created a commission to review Owens’ alleged offenses on June 17.

Florence said he is focusing his campaign on empowering young people, improving public safety, supporting local businesses and fostering transparent and inclusive governance.

“With transparent government it’s just making sure that the citizens of district two know that I am their voice and I’m acting on behalf of them, and I’m being upfront and accountable with communication and everything,” he said.

Florence is now excited for his historic as the youngest person in Camilla to run for city council.

Early voting starts on October 14, with two Saturday dates. Election Day is November 4.
