Description

OCALA, Fla. (TND) — Traffic stops leading to criminal charges are fairly common, but finding someone with nine license suspensions sure is.

A sheriff's deputy looking for speeders in Florida reported seeing a green two-door Mazda “at a high rate of speed,” on June 28.

“He visually estimated the vehicle to be traveling over 70 mph in a posted 45 mph zone,” the arrest report continued. “He activated his agency-issued vehicle speed radar unit [model description] which gave a clear audible tone showing the speed at 72 mph.

“He then conducted a traffic stop.

“Upon making contact with the violator, he advised the defendant Todd Mills made a spontaneous statement, ‘You gonna to have to take me in, I don't have a license.’

“The defendant provided him with a Florida ID card.

“The defendant stated he was driving to get his hardship license today.”
Another deputy and a trainee “responded to the scene” and arrested Mills “for driving with a suspended driver's license.”

The charge was only a misdemeanor, despite the number of offenses.

But then, “An inventory search was conducted on the defendant's vehicle due to the defendant's vehicle being towed,” and that led to three felonies and more.

“During the inventory search,” the deputy wrote, “I could smell the odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

“I located a glass pipe stuff between the center console of the vehicle and driver’s seat.
“The glass pipe contained a small amount of burnt substance that field tested positive for THC.

“I also located a small blue canister containing three prescription pills.”

The first, round and pink, was reportedly 20 mg amphetamine-dextroamphetamine, a Schedule 2 narcotic.

The second was rectangular and white, and identified as alprazolam 2 mg, a Schedule 4 narcotic.

The last, oval and white, was reportedly acetaminophen-oxycodone-hydrochloride 325 mg, a Schedule 2 narcotic.

The deputy continued, “I also located the black cylinder-type container in the glove box of the defendant's vehicle that contained a green leafy substance. The substance field tested positive for THC.”
Finally, “The defendant uttered he held an active prescription for all three pills found inside the vehicle. The dependent also advised he did not have a medical marijuana card.”

The arrest report listed “nine different suspensions,” all from the past year-and-a-half:

It also noted, “The defendant is a registered sex offender out of Marion County, Florida, for lewd and lascivious battery with victim 12 to 15.

“Due to the sexual offender status under Florida state statute 903.046(2)(m), he is being held on a no bond status.”

That wasn’t exactly the case.

Mills, 32, was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving with a suspended license.

He appeared in court the next day, his bond was set at $19,000, and he was released after 33 hours.

Mills also got a ticket for driving with a suspended license.
