VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) map lists several South Georgia counties under an extreme drought advisory. In response, Lowndes County EMA officials have issued a temporary restriction on burning yard debris in unincorporated areas. The ban is in effect until further notice. Brooks County has issued a similar notice.

“To reduce wildfire risks and protect public safety, property, and natural resources, all open burning of yard debris, including leaves, limbs, grass, and other vegetative matter, is prohibited within the unincorporated area of Lowndes County until drought conditions improve.”

Several Southeast Georgia counties are also listed on the U.S. Drought Monitor for Extreme drought. The affected counties include.

  • Seminole
  • Decatur
  • Grady
  • Lowndes
  •  Thomas
  •  Brooks
  •  Echols
  • Ware
  •  Berrien
  •  Atkinson
  •  Coffee

The remaining parts of southwest Georgia are listed under a severe drought.

The USDM ranks drought levels across the country. The lowest level is abnormally dry, followed by moderate drought, severe drought, extreme drought, and exceptional drought. The majority of Georgia is under a severe drought. Levels are monitored and updated weekly using various data collected by experts according to the USDM.
