BALTIMORE (WBFF) — During his Tuesday visit to the Port of Baltimore, President Joe Biden announced a $3 billion investment to strengthen port infrastructure, support good-paying and union jobs, and reduce pollution nationwide.
The presidentBiden highlighted some of the key expected outcomes from this new billion-dollar investment, ranging from boosting local employment to cutting pollutant emissions. “The new $3 billion funding we are delivering today will help ports and communities all across America. It will cut ports opening costs, strengthen supply chains, make American businesses more competitive and keep consumer prices down, while slashing carbon pollution and supporting an estimated 40,000 new good paying jobs."
During the 15-minute speech, he also called on Congress to fully fund the reconstruction of the Francis Key Bridge by the end of this year.
“As I promised last spring, we won't stop until the new bridge is finished completely. Finished. Finished. Finished. I am calling on Congress to fully fund it this year, before we go out. This year,” Biden said. He went on tothank the Coast Guard, the Navy, the Army Corps of Engineers, who helped remove 50,000 tons of concrete and steel wreckage out of the Patapsco River after a Dali container ship hit the bridge back in March.
During his speech, the president also took a jab at Tony Hinchcliffe’s racist joke told at Donald Trump’s rally in New York on Sunday, when the comedian referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”
Today I'm proud to announce we're delivering $3 billion in funding from my Inflation Reduction Act, to help clean up and modernize ports in 27 different states and territories, from Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and beyond, including, yes, Puerto Rico,” adding that he would “take that guy [Hinchcliffe] for a swim out there.
Biden also criticized Trump directly, claiming his predeccesor and possible successor “promised infrastructure every week for four years, but he never built a damn thing.”
“When I see this port now, cranes in the air, ships and cargo on the move, I hope and feel, well I hope you feel, a real sense of pride. I mean it sincerely. Pride. Pride in your community. Pride in our country. Pride in the capacity of our labor unions,” Biden said during his closing remarks.
Gov. Moore, who Biden claimed “may be the best governor in America,” thanked the Biden-Harris administration for their support throughout the recovery process of the Key Bridge. “I want to say from the bottom of my heart, and I will say it until my last breath: Thank you President Biden and thank you Vice-president Harris. The Port of Baltimore is back. And it is better than ever because of their leadership and the leadership of so many that are here with us today.”
“President Biden was one of the first people who called us following the Francis Key Bridge tragedy and that partnership continues to shine bright today,” Mayor Brandon Scott added during the event.
The mayor opened up about how Biden personally helped him during the aftermath of the Key Bridge collapse. “Thank you for being the mentor and friend to me that you have been. When I was taking on racist attacks after the key Bridge collapse you told me to keep going and to keep proving them wrong.”
President Biden ended his day in Charm City with a visit to BMORE LICKS, a traditional ice-cream shop in the region.
