Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - New data shows significant changes in Albany and Dougherty County flood maps. That’s why Albany city officials are urging neighbors to get involved in updating the maps.

While the new data shows that many areas have been removed from flood risks, some areas have been added.

The process of updating flood maps is essential in making sure structures and properties are appropriate to withstand flood conditions.

Albany’s flood maps have not been revised since 2009, but flood map updates are not required every year. What is required is updating the city’s community rating system, which helps neighbors with flood insurance.

“Right now it looks like we’re going to have some significant change in the South, Southeast areas. We also have some increase towards the North, and Northwest areas so it’s a lot of changes in different areas,” said Angel Gray, the Deputy Director of Planning and Development.

The updated flood maps won’t be finalized until more community input is given.

Grey said now more than ever it’s important for people to look at the updated flood maps and ensure they are accurate.

“Right now, we’re asking the community to give their opinion on the maps and take a look and make sure,” she said.

With Albany’s history of catastrophic flood events like the Flood of 94′, Gray says it’s important to be in the know and make sure you have the right flood insurance.

“We want to build Albany to a point where people want to come into a community that’s building better,” she said. “We want to be more resilient to the flooding. We want to be more resilient to any inclement weather that’s coming our way and when we build Albany in the right way, that’s what we’re looking for.”

These updated flood maps won’t be finalized until more community input is given. Right now, anyone can go and look at preliminary flood maps at 240 Pine Ave., Suite 300, in Albany from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
