Description

WASHINGTON (TND) — An Alaska man is accused of threatening to hurt and kill six justices on the U.S. Supreme Court, according to court documents.

Panos Anastasiou allegedly sent over 465 messages from March 2023 to July 16 to six of the nine justices through a website that the court maintained, according to the indictment.

"Some of these threats were intended to intimidate Supreme Court Justices 1-6 and retaliate against them for official actions Supreme Court Justices 1-6 had taken in their official capacity as federal justices," the indictment said.

Federal prosecutors also accused the 76-year-old of threatening family members of the justices he targeted.

The DOJ stated thatAnastasiou's messages, which contained violent, racist, and homophobic rhetoric coupled with threats of assassination by torture, hanging, and firearms, escalated in January.

"We allege that the defendant made repeated, heinous threats to murder and torture Supreme Court Justices and their families to retaliate against them for decisions he disagreed with,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland stated in a news release. "Our justice system depends on the ability of judges to make their decisions based on the law, and not on fear. Our democracy depends on the ability of public officials to do their jobs without fearing for their lives or the safety of their families."

Anastasiou was arrested inAnchorage on Wednesday.

He's facingnine counts of making threats against a federal judge and 13 counts of making threats in interstate commerce.

Anastasiou made his first court appearance after his arrest before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kyle F. Reardon.

If convicted, Anastasiou faces a up to 10 years in prison for each count of making threats against a federal judge and a maximum penalty of five years in prison for each count of making threats in interstate commerce.

Threats against the more conservative justices spiked after Roe vs. Wade was overturned two years ago.
