BOULDER, Colo. (TNND) — An 82-year-old Colorado woman who was injured in the Molotov cocktail attack on demonstrators in support of Israeli hostages has died, according to the Boulder County District Attorney's Office.
Karen Diamond "died tragically as a result of the severe injuries that she suffered in the attack," a release read.
"The District Attorney’s Office has been in close communication with Karen Diamond’s family throughout this difficult time," the release continued. "The family has asked our office to share, 'The family asks for privacy as they continue to grieve.'"
Mohamed Sabry Soliman was charged with 12 hate crime counts last week. He was accused of trying to kill eight people who were hurt by the Molotov cocktails, as well as others who were nearby.
Soliman entered a not guilty plea to the charges during a hearing on Friday in federal court.
He already faced dozens of counts in state court on charges including attempted first-degree murder, using an incendiary device, and animal cruelty because a dog was hurt in the attack. He has not been arraigned on the initial charges that now include first-degree murder.
"Part of what makes Colorado special is that people come together in response to a tragedy; I know that the community will continue to unite in supporting the Diamond family and all the victims of this attack," District Attorney Michael Dougherty said.
The next court hearing in the state case will be the preliminary hearing scheduled for July 15 at 1:30 p.m.
Federal investigators said Soliman entered the park on June 1 carrying a backpack weed sprayer containing flammable liquid and a black plastic container that held at least 18 glass bottles and jars, several of which had red rags stuffed into the top to act as wicks.
Soliman threw two Molotov cocktails at the group while shouting, "Free Palestine!", according to the unsealed indictment.
A handwritten document was later discovered in Soliman's vehicle, investigators said, with the statements, "Zionism is our enemies untill [sic] Jerusalem is liberated and they are expelled from our land,” and further described Israel as a “cancer entity.”
The indictment further alleges Soliman told officers during an interview that he viewed “anyone supporting the exist [sic] of Israel on our land” to be “Zionist" and that he “decide[d] to take [his] revenge from these people” and “search[ed] the internet looking for any Zionist event."
He added that he learned of the Run for Their Lives group through searches on the internet for "Zionist" events and identified the group "Zionist" group when he saw the flags and signs they carried outside the courthouse.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Boulder Police Department are continuing to investigate.
Soliman is an Egyptian national in the U.S. illegally with two expired visas and reported public support for the Muslim Brotherhood. He also attempted to purchase a firearm last November but was unsuccessful.
