Description

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has identified all eight people killed in a tragic boating incident on Lake Tahoe that happened over the weekend.

The victims have been identified as Paula Bozinovich, 71, and Terry Pickles, 73, both from Redwood City, California; Joshua Antony Pickles, 37, from San Francisco, California; Peter Bayes, 72, from Lincoln, California; Timothy O’Leary, 71, from Auburn, California; Theresa Giullari, 66, and James Guck, 69, both from Honeoye, New York; and Stephen Lindsay, 63, from Springwater, New York.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office expressed its "deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were lost and all those who have been affected by this tragic event."

The sheriff’s office also extended gratitude to the numerous agencies that assisted in the rescue, search, and recovery efforts. "Without their assistance, the success of the search and recovery operations would not have been nearly as efficient," the office said.

We've learned that Joshua Pickles was an executive for DoorDash — his parents Paula Bozinovich and Terry Pickles were also killed in the incident. DoorDash released the following statement to News 4-Fox 11 on Tuesday:

We are heartbroken by the tragic accident that took the life of our beloved colleague, Josh Pickles.
Josh loved his team and was an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. During his nearly seven years at DoorDash, he brought a contagious spirit that lifted those around him. The loss of Josh is immeasurable. We miss him deeply and will carry his memory with us always.
Our thoughts and love are with his wife, his daughter, his family, and all who were close to him. We are working to support them through this incredibly difficult time.

The Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe boat crew initially responded to reports of 10 people in the water after their boat capsized around 3 p.m. Saturday, June 21. The response included the Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento C-27 Spartan aircrew, El Dorado County Sheriff's and K-9 unit, and California State Parks rangers and seasonal lifeguards.

Authorities confirmed that initially six people died, two were injured, and two were missing following the capsizing of the 27-foot gold Chris-craft vessel. The two injured individuals were transported to a local hospital. The two remaining bodies were pulled from the frigid waters of Lake Tahoe on Sunday night and Monday afternoon.

Callers informed the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office that the group was visible in the water, with waves reaching heights of up to eight feet.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that the sudden and deadly storm brought abnormal, out-of-the-ordinary conditions to Lake Tahoe.

The forecast initially predicted a 30 to 50% chance of rain and a 15% chance of thunderstorms. However, the storm's arrival led to a rapid temperature drop of 15 to 25 degrees below normal and wind gusts reaching 35 to 45 miles per hour.

The NWS, which monitors the lake's conditions using four buoys, began receiving calls from locals about unusually large waves on the lake's north side. Coast Guard officials confirmed water swells up to eight feet high when the vessel overturned.

"This was more convective in nature," said Matthew Chyba, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "That being that the winds were produced from the result of the storm collapsing than say synoptic-wise, that the weather pattern caused it.... The storm just tracked from the north to the south and caused these waves to increase in their height."

The NWS advises locals to not only check the forecast before heading out on the water but also to remain vigilant for any potential inclement weather.

Authorities continue to investigate whether the 10 people on board were wearing lifejackets at the time of the capsizing.
