CORDELE, Ga. (WALB) - A 16-year-old is facing multiple charges after officers recovered two firearms during an early morning patrol in Crisp County.

According to the Cordele Police Department (CPD), around 1 a.m. on May 13, officers were patrolling the area of 24th Avenue and Joe Wright Drive when they spotted three unknown males running from the area.

Officers made contact with one juvenile male, and during the encounter, an AR-15 pistol-style weapon reportedly fell from the teen’s waistband. Authorities say a further search led to the discovery of a Taurus pistol inside the juvenile’s backpack.

The 16-year-old was arrested and charged with the following:

• 2 counts of possession of a pistol by a person under 18 years of age
• 2 counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers.

Officials say proactive police work, along with assistance from the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office, helped remove two guns from the streets.
