HOUSTON (TNND) — One person was killed and 16 people were shot when an "uninvited guest" was asked to leave during a large house party in Houston Sunday night, according to the Houston Police Department.

An 18-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the injured range in age from 16 to 40, police said in a statement. Their identities and current conditions were not immediately available.

Officers said several people at the scene were detained and questioned, but no suspect is in custody.

The department began receiving calls about shots fired around 12:50 a.m. at a home in southeast Houston, according to Assistant Police Chief Patricia Cantu.

Cantu said when officers arrived, "the scene was still very much active," and gunshots could be heard. Police also reported seeing multiple people wounded in the area outside of the home.

Witnesses told police that a family party was taking place when an uninvited guest was asked to leave and began shooting, prompting others to return fire, according to Cantu.

Some of the victims were able to transport themselves to area hospitals, while multiple people were in surgery for critical conditions.

"It's still very complicated," Cantu told reporters at a briefing. "It was chaotic from the get-go."
