Butch grew up in west Tennessee and north Mississippi and calls Slayden, MS his hometown. He graduated from Mississippi State University, and later earned graduate and doctoral degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, majoring in New Testament and Greek. He also has served as pastor of churches in Mississippi and Louisiana.
Butch met his wife, Ginny, at Mississippi State. They have two children, Carrie and Will. Carrie and her husband, Buddy Kelley, have three children Joshua, Levi, and Olivia. Butch calls them "JLO." Will and his wife, Hannah, have one daughter Ruby Mae and are expecting their second child very soon.
Besides cheering for the Bulldogs of MSU, Pastor Butch enjoys cooking and fishing. He especially loves catching trout, bream, shoal bass, and any other fish on the fly. He considers standing in a mountain stream trying to coax a trout to bite a fly is one of life's finest moments.
