VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - A 22-year-old woman died on Friday, Nov. 7 after a man allegedly hit her with his pickup truck in Valdosta, according to the Valdosta Police Department (VPD).

The woman, Prenesha Holmes, was found at about 11 p.m. Friday after a citizen called Lowndes County E911 to report that a woman was lying on the side of the road on Wisenbaker Lane. When the Valdosta Fire Department and other EMS officials arrived, they found that Holmes was not responsive. Her body was transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

VPD said it appeared that Holmes was physically assaulted and struck by a vehicle. Their investigation led them to a pickup truck that was seen in the area.

The owner of the truck is William Anderson Smith, 39, officials said. VPD said that Holmes was with Smith inside his truck when they got into a physical altercation. At some point, Holmes reportedly got out of the truck, and then Smith allegedly hit her with it.

Smith was arrested and is now charged with felony murder, felony aggravated assault and felony hit and run, VPD said. He was taken to the Lowndes County Jail.

“From the minute the call was received at the E911 Center until the arrest, this was outstanding teamwork by the E911 dispatchers and law enforcement. Because of the quick action of everyone involved, this offender and evidence connecting him to the incident were recovered within a couple of hours. Our thoughts go out to Ms. Holmes’ family and friends, as they go through the devastation of losing their loved one.”

VPD said this was an isolated incident, and that there is no further threat to the public.
