LAURENS COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Several Georgia law enforcement agencies have responded to an incident on Thursday, June 12.

According to the McRae-Helena Police Department, a chase started in Laurens County, and the vehicle crashed at the intersection of US 441 and US 280, at the Wheeler County line in McRae.

The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) said that multiple shots were fired at officers on the ground.

At around noon, the sheriff’s office said on Facebook that deputies tried to stop a vehicle with two armed suspects inside.

LCSO said that the suspects opened fire on deputies during the pursuit.

The two suspects are now in custody, according to the Telfair Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office asked McRae residents to remain safe during the search for the suspects by:

  • Locking all doors and windows
  • Not leaving keys in vehicles
  • Staying indoors and remaining vigilant
  • Reporting any suspicious activity to 911

The Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Telfair County Sheriff’s Office, Laurens County Sheriff’s Office and McRae-Helena Police chief were at the scene earlier today.
