ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — More than 900 flights in and out of the world’s busiest airport were delayed Sunday as bad weather moved across the country.

“This is all an inconvenience. It’s sad,” said Michael Oliver, who was traveling back home to New Jersey with his family.

The end of Thanksgiving turned into flight delays galore for hundreds of passengers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

“And here we are with that line and there’s no flights until Tuesday,” said Michael’s wife, Deborah Oliver.

“We have an eight-family crew. So now we have to split all my kids up with my in-laws, and this is not good at all. So if I have to speak negative about anybody, they got to get better than this,” added Michael.

The Olivers said their Sunday flight on Spirit back home to New Jersey kept getting delayed.

Eventually the Olivers said they boarded only to be deplaned. They had been told their flight was canceled because the crew had worked too many hours.

Deborah said her one daughter is “missing out on school.”

“I got a doctor’s appointment,” said Michael. “I need to be there tomorrow morning. So, good luck with that.”

The Olivers were forced to spend more money for a Delta flight home.

“We’re hoping 9 a.m. is our flight, so we might just spend the night here,” Deborah said.

Jamie Stewart shared a similar story as the Olivers. She said her Saturday morning flight on Frontier back home to Wisconsin saw back-to-back delays. At her scheduled time of departure she said there was no pilot. Then delays got blamed on weather.

“So I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. You saying that is the weather, but why is certain aircrafts going in and certain aircrafts not?’” said Stewart.

Stewart said she eventually boarded the plane only to deplane, because she got told she missed her window to fly out. A couple hours later she boarded the plane a second time.

Stewart explained: “We hovered around for 45 minutes. The pilot got back on the, you know, the intercom. It was like, ‘Guys, we just got a call from Chicago saying that we cannot land because there is no ground support.’”

Stewart added: “Then at one o’clock in the morning they canceled out the flight, which was very distasteful. Like, you could have canceled out the flight at 5:40 p.m., not one o’clock in the morning, where it makes prices go up, Ubers go up.”

Stewart also had to buy a Delta flight home Sunday morning, and missed out on working her Saturday night shift.

“But for me, I know what I need in my budget. I didn’t want to miss no day of work. That’s why I planned it like that,” Stewart said.

“So now you’ve got to have extra money just to go through what we are going through. Imagine if you didn’t have that,” said Michael.

The Olivers and Stewart said they were able to get refunds through Spirit and Frontier.

Atlanta News First reached out to Delta, Spirit and Frontier to inquire about the delays.
