TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS12) — Phoenix Ikner, the 20-year-old suspect in a deadly shooting at Florida State University, made his first court appearance Tuesday morning.

Ikner faces two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder. He appeared virtually, through Zoom, for his court appearance.

During the hearing, the court appointed the Public Defender's Office to represent Ikner after determining he is indigent — in court, typically meaning a person cannot afford a lawyer to represent them in a criminal or civil case. The state requested that Ikner be held without bond and imposed a special condition of no contact with any victims, their families, or other witnesses.

"There are numerous victims, both present and on Zoom," said a prosecutor for the state. "None of them need to be addressed."

Randall Harper, Assistant Public Defender, waived any argument at the hearing and confirmed the appointment to represent Ikner. The judge ordered no bond and reiterated the no-contact condition, specifying that Ikner must not communicate with the families of the victims or the listed victims of the attempted murder charges.

The court emphasized that no contact means Ikner cannot call, text, email, or use social media to reach out to the victims or their families, nor can he ask anyone else to contact them on his behalf.

The state further requested that Ikner have no contact with any other witnesses, noting that there were many other students present during the incident. The judge agreed, stating that Ikner should not attempt to reach out to any witnesses or the families of the victims.
