TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Arrest documents for the suspected Florida State University gunman were released Tuesday, revealing more details regarding how the campus shooting unfolded nearly a month ago.
Twenty-year-old FSU student Phoenix Ikner is accused of opening fire on campus on April 17, claiming two lives and injuring five others.
He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder, according to court records.
Tuesday morning, Ikner was denied bond and ordered to have no contact with the victims or witnesses.
The 20-year-old’s arrest papers paint a moment-by-moment picture of the shooting as captured by nearby surveillance cameras in and around the Student Union, as well as witness interviews.
The documents also detail evidence located on the scene, including a shotgun and ammunition.
Law enforcement also found a “Hummer, registered to Phoenix’s father,” a short distance from the Student Union.
Ikner pointed a shotgun at one victim, but it appeared to malfunction, according to the account.
Ikner allegedly put the shotgun back in the vehicle and retrieved a handgun instead.
The day of the campus shooting, Ikner’s arrest papers indicate that dispatch received multiple calls at about 11:58 a.m. about an active shooter at FSU’s campus between the Student Union and Moor Auditorium on N. Woodward Avenue.
Information received by dispatch alleged that there was a single shooter “described as a white male wearing a red/garnet shirt,” according to the court records. Moments later, local, state and federal law enforcement agencies began to respond.
Initial responding officers from FSU Police arrived in the area and heard gunshots before encountering “a male wearing a garnet shirt and shorts in the courtyard area outside of the Student Union positioned in a ‘shooting stance.’”
As law enforcement approached Ikner, court records said a handgun was recovered nearby while he was shooting at a person fleeing the scene. Moments later, a responding officer then shot Ikner.
Shell casings and live shotgun rounds of ammunition were found in and around the Student Union, according to the documents.
Multiple killed, injured after shooting at Florida State University:
Video footage from in and around the Student Union, as well as witness interviews, revealed that at 11:57 a.m., Ikner held “a black object in his right pocket as he runs” past the camera at the Student Union.
His arrest papers go on to say that the black object was determined to be a firearm.
A minute later, the 20-year-old was then seen running towards the Bookstore entrance, where police said he shot three victims.
Thirty-five seconds later, Ikner was seen running out of the door, chasing one victim, Tiru Chabba, before shooting him. Nearly 20 seconds later, court records indicate Ikner returned to where Chabba was lying and shot him again.
Footage went on to reveal that as Robert Morales walked hurriedly through the food court at 11:59 a.m., Ikner ran up from behind him and shot him in the back.
Just after shooting Morales, surveillance footage captured Ikner chasing a separate victim through the food court and shooting at them as they fled.
A minute later, at noon, a camera facing the eastern entrance of the Student Union showed Ikner running through the courtyard before falling to the ground after responding officers shot him.
He was then detained by several officers.
On Monday, he was released from the hospital and charged with murder after being hospitalized for weeks due to being shot in the jaw by FSU Police as they responded to the deadly shooting.
