ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Veterans and community members gathered on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 11 at American Legion Post 30 in Albany to honor local heroes with a Veterans Day breakfast. Post 30 Commander Daniel Brewer said the event was about recognizing the service and sacrifice of those who served.
“I’m all about veterans,” Brewer said. “This is a day of recognizing them. We put the word out. We get them here, and we want to give them a little honor and tell them thank you for what they did.”
The celebration included presentations from Post 30 members, the Young Marines and Congressman Sanford Bishop, who is also a veteran. Bishop said honoring those who served is an important reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom.
“Our military personnel and their families paid the price for the freedoms we enjoy,” Bishop said. “It is always good to remember our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much for us and our country.”
Michael Merritt, a local Air Force veteran who served for 36 years, said the best part of the morning — besides the biscuits and gravy — was connecting with other veterans.
“It makes me feel great,” Merritt said. “That’s what I’m here for now — to influence veterans and make their lives better.”
Along with breakfast, Post 30 members handed out memorial flowers to remember those who couldn’t be there and to show appreciation for those who could.
