SOUTH GEORGIA (WALB) – A major milestone in military history was marked this weekend as the Albany community celebrated the 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

On November 10, 1775, John Adams drafted the resolution that established the Continental Marines, the foundation of today’s U.S. Marine Corps. That date has since been observed as the official birthday of the Marines, one of the nation’s proudest military traditions.

Across the country, Marines and their supporters are recognizing the 250th anniversary in special ways, and the U.S. Mint has even released a commemorative coin to honor the Corps’ rich history.

In Albany, the community came together Saturday for the annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball, hosted by the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce. The event honored active-duty and retired Marines, their families, and the deep ties between the Corps and the Albany community.

Lieutenant Colonel (USMC, Ret.) Donald E. “Don” Gray Jr., Co-Chair of the Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee, served as the Guest of Honor. Known for his Texas roots and community spirit, Gray was recognized for his dedication to service both to his country and his hometown.

Today, more than 200,000 active-duty and reserve Marines continue to serve around the world, carrying on the proud legacy that began 250 years ago.
