ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Two teens were killed by a lightning strike in south Georgia on Thursday, according to authorities.
The incident happened during severe storms.
The victims, identified as 18-year-old Randall Martin III and 19-year-old Joey Nelson, were Ware County High School graduates and “cherished members” of the Ware County Gators football team.
Ware County High School is located in the city of Waycross. Nelson was the grandnephew of Waycross City Clerk Jaqualine Powell.
“On behalf of the City of Waycross, I extend our deepest condolences to the Nelson and Martin families,” Waycross Mayor Michael-Angelo James said in a press release. “We grieve with you, we support you, and we stand beside you in the unimaginable time of loss. Our hearts especially go out to Mrs. Powell and to all who held these young men dear.”
